Creating and Maintaining a Tobacco Free School Policy - In the spring of 2007, the Maine Legislature passed legislation that tightens the law regarding tobacco use on school grounds. The statute now reads, “Tobacco use in the buildings or on the grounds of any elementary or secondary school is prohibited.” This means that there is no tobacco use by anyone—students, staff or visitors—on school grounds at any time, 365 days per year.
